Thomas Gunn married (__?__) (__?__) circa 1639 prob. in Dorchester or Windsor.1 He died on 26 February 1680/81 in Westfield, Hampden Co., Mass..2

Immigration: before 1634, when he is found in Dorchester, probably of England.
Freeman: on 6 May 1635 in Dorchester, Suffolk Co., Mass..
Founder/Proprietor: Windsor, by 1640.
Religion/Church: Admission to Dorchester church prior to 6 May 1635 implied by freemanship.
Education: Signed his will by mark.

Thomas probably emigrated from England and was one of the early settlers of Dorchester, Massachusetts, receiving land there before 10 Jan 1634. He became a freeman 6 May 1635 at Dorchester, indicating that he was born before 1614. He removed to Windsor, Connecticut, by 1640. His home-lot in Windsor was 15 rods wide and bounded on the North by lands of William Hill and on the south by Capt. John Mason.
Thomas married an unnamed wife probably in Dorchester or Windsor about 1639. His children were all born in Windsor. He removed in 1665 to Westfield, Mass. and became active in the Westfield Parish, leaving all his Windsor property to his son-in-law, Timothy Thrall, husband of Deborah. Thomas Gunn died in Westfield on Feb. 26, 1681.
It's possible that Thomas was an innkeeper as it is ordered by Windsor townsmen that "Thomas Gunn should entertain as a tabler, Capt., Thomas and his family for the winter"; soon after he had "liberty to entertain Isaac Holt in his family one quarter of a year, but no longer, with out approbation."
At Thomas's death his children were all married and raising their own families. His widow outlived him by seventeen years and died in Westfield in 1678.

John Moses was the son of John Moses. He married Mary Brown on 18 May 1653 in Windsor, Hartford Co., Conn..1,2 He died on 14 October 1683 in Windsor, Hartford Co., Conn..3

Immigration: before March 1647 His first appearance in Windsor.
Religion/Church: Leanings towards the English Anglican Church.
Education: Signed his name.

John Moses origin is uncertain, however, Zebina Moses, argues that he is the son of John Moses, a shipwright of Plymouth Massachusetts. Zebina Moses presents a circumstantial argument based on John's association in Windsor with those involved in the shipping industry, such as John Griffin, his association with other names connected with Plymouth, and his leaning towards the English Church. There is also an account of an anvil held in the Moses family as late as the 1880's. This anvil is stamped "1632" and is said to have been the property of John Moses of Plymouth and then John of Windsor.
Since the earliest days, each town had an active militia used for its own defense and to answer the alarms of its neighbors. In 1658, the colony was considering a force under a central command with the responsibility to quickly answer to emergencies throughout the colony. Unlike the foot soldiers of town militias, this force was to be made up of horsemen. On March 11, 1658, the General Court met in Hartford and established a Troop of Horse to act in the colonies defense. This troop was to consist of thirty-seven men under the direct command of Captain John Mason. Captain Mason had not only been the colonies military leader since the Pequot War of twenty years earlier, he was also a sitting magistrate and highly regarded in both military and civil affairs. These troops were to outfit themselves with their own horse, armor and firearms. The thirty-seven men who made up this troop were, for the most part, of the second generation and sons of some of the most influential families in the colony. Riding among these men was John Moses.
In December of 1675, a campaign was made against the Narragansetts. In what would be called "The Great Swamp Fight", Connecticut soldiers marched on the winter fortress of the Narragansetts. The campaign was a success, but the cost was large. Of the 300 Connecticut troops, forty were killed or died later and another forty were seriously wounded. Three of the five company commanders died and a fourth, Capt. John Mason, would die within a year of his wounds. This was the son of Connecticut's venerable military leader, John Mason, who had died three years earlier. Windsor had sent twenty-eight men on the expedition and a quarter of them would die. Among the survivors was John Moses.

It was a glorious victory for the English, but it brought sorrow as well as safety to their homes. Six captains and 80 soldiers were killed or mortally wounded, and 150 wounded. Nor was this all. Two days of exposure and fatigue, and three hours of hard fighting were followed by a distressing night march of some eighteen miles to headquarters, through storm and sleet and deep snows, bearing with them their dead and wounded. The next morning the snow was exceedingly deep and the cold intense, and the jaded and frost-bitten army could scarcely move. 400 troops were unfit for duty. . . Capts. Marshall, Seely, and Gallup "died in the bed of honor," while Mason was so badly wounded that he died within a year after."4

In 1681, John Moses lost two of his sons. Zebina Moses claims that they died of wounds suffered years earlier in The Great Swamp Fight and cites Stiles History of Ancient Windsor 1:225. I have checked the citation of those that were "wounded that they died" but the sons of John Moses are not on this list.

In 1653 John married Mary Brown of Windsor. Mary's origin is also unknown. She may have been related to Peter Brown of Windsor, possibly a sister, however, this is not helpful as Peter's origins are also a mystery. Earlier speculation that the Brown family of Windsor were descendants of Peter Brown of the Mayflower appear to be unfounded.
Military Service: 1658 - the Troop of Horse serving under Capt. John Mason; 1675 - King Philip's War, "The Great Swamp Fight" with the Narragansetts.5
