áááááSergt. Samuel Wilcoxson was born circa 1640 in Stratford, Fairfield Co., Conn..1 He was the son of William Wilcoxson and Margaret (__?__). He married Hannah Rice, daughter of Richard Rice and Elizabeth (__?__), circa 1665.2,3 He died on 12 March 1712/13 in Simsbury, Hartford Co., Conn..4
ááááá
Freeman: May, 1672.5
Education: Administered and inventoried estates regularly.
Public Office: Deputy from Simsbury to the Connecticut General Court, 1689, 1694-1701, 1710-1712.
Military Service: Sergeant in the Militia.

áááááBorn in Stratford, in 1658 Winthrop called Samuel seventeen or eighteen years of age, establishing a birth year of about 1640. Samuel married Hannah Rice about 1665 and was residing in Windsor by 1666. Hannah was born in Concord Massachusetts, a town Samuel's father had ties with throughout his life.
áááááSamuel was very active in town and colony affairs and was probably fairly well educated. He served many terms as Simsbury's representative to the General Court and was a sergeant of the train band, probably serving in King Philip's War. He was often called upon to administer and inventory estates.
áááááSamuel died in 1712/13 at about the age of 73. His wife Hannah was alive in 1708 but had died by the time of her husbands death four years later. They had lived a long and fruitful life and had been married in excess of forty years and seen their three sons marry and start their families. Their death spared them the events of the following year.
áááááThe September after Samuel's death his son Samuel died at the age of 47. Their daughter Margaret died the following year on December 21, 1714, two weeks following the birth of her illegitimate son Benoni. Administration of Margaret's estate was granted to her brother Joseph who claimed in his accounting that Margaret left "no lawful issue". In essence, he was saying that the estate should go to her surviving siblings. The court decided that the estate should go to the illegitimate child. The father remained unnamed but may have been a Viets.

áááááBorn is Simsbury, William married Elizabeth Wilson in 1699/00 and they settled in Salmon Brook working lands north and west of Barn Door Hills. He was a sergeant in the train band and a member of the Simsbury Church. When he died in 1732/33, at about the age of 63, he left an estate of £438 including lands in Simsbury and Farmington. William lived long enough to see all but his youngest marry. Daniel, then a minor, chose his mother as his guardian. Elizabeth died 13 years later in 1746 at the age of 71. This branch of the family shortened the name to "Wilcox" as spelled in William's probate record.

John Griffin and Anna Bancroft, on 1 May 1672 in Windsor, Hartford Co., Conn..3,4 He died on 3 August 1697 in Windsor, Hartford Co., Conn., at age 44.5,4
ááááá
Religion/Church: in 1686 Samuel and Mary were admitted into the Windsor Church under Rev. Samuel Mather.
Military Service: in 1675 In King Philip's War, Samuel and his brother-in-law erected a fence and "kept garrison at my uncle Philip's house."

áááááSamuel Wilson was only three years old when his father died and he was raised in Windsor by his aunt Isabel (Wilson) Phelps and her husband, William Phelps. Isabel and William remained childless and raised Samuel as their own son, possibly even adopting him.
áááááIn 1672 Samuel married Mary Griffin and began their family. During King Philip's War Samuel had "kept garrison at my uncle Philip's house," and in 1676 he contributed 1s 3d for the poor in other colonies who had suffered hardship during the war. In 1679 Windsor attempted to re-establish the settlement in Simsbury, which had been abandoned, and then burned by Indians, during King Philip's War. Samuel was among those given a grant with the condition of settlement but he probably did not take advantage of this and remained in Windsor.
áááááIn 1648, Thomas Nowell had left property to Samuel's father and also to a Christopher Nowell of England. Years later Samuel and his brother John petitioned the court for administration on the estate of Thomas Nowell, they being next of kin in this country, and this was granted to them. In 1657, Christopher Nowell of England had bequeathed his lands in New England to Rebecca (Greathead) Shore, in England. In 1696, nearly fifty years after the will had been executed, Samuel and John were summoned to answer for illegal trespass and improving lands formerly owned by Thomas Nowell. My interpretation is that Samuel and John lost this land as, in 1697, they assigned administration to Abe Haseltine of Bradford Massachusetts, who had come into the rights of the property originally set out to Christopher Nowell in England.
áááááSamuel Wilson died in 1697 at the age of 45 leaving an estate valued at £430. The widow was left with small children and she soon married Anthony Hoskins as his second wife. Anthony died in 1707 leaving Mary a widow for the second time. Mary made her will in 1716 however the estate wasn't inventoried until February of 1735 indicating that she may have died closer to the latter date, at about age 82, and having survived Samuel Wilson by some thirty-seven years.
