áááááWilliam Kelsey was born circa 1600 probably in Chelmsford, co. Essex, England.1 He married in England, or shortly after his arrival in Cambridge Massachusetts, a wife possibly named Hester(__?__) (__?__) between 1625 and 1628.2 He died circa 1680 in Killingworth, Middlesex Co, Conn., at age about 80.3
ááááá
Immigration: in 1633, From England, when he is first found at Cambridge, MA.
Freeman: on 4 March 1634/35 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Mass..
Founder/Proprietor: Hartford, 1636.
Education: Signed with his mark.
Residence: in 1663 Removed from Hartford to Killingworth, CT.
Residence: in 1639 Recieved his home lot in the distribution at Hartford.
Residence: in 1633 Cambridge, MA.

áááááWilliam Kelsey was born in England about 1600, perhaps in Chelmsford, County Essex. It is possible, though not certain, that William was the son of George and Elizabeth (Hammond) Kelsey. Elizabeth being the daughter of William Hammond of County Hertford. George and Elizabeth had three sons, William, Henry, and John. Although there is no further record of William, John and Henry are assigned a coat of arms in 1634, by which time our William was in New England. If the above named William is not the William of New England, it is probable that he was of this family.4
áááááOur first record of William Kelsey in New England is found in Cambridge, Massachusetts in August, 1633. Cambridge was settled in 1632 by the followers of Rev. Thomas Hooker. The Rev. Thomas Hooker, who had been pastor of the Non-conformist Congregation of Braintree, Chelmsford and the neighboring parishes in the County of Essex in England, had been forced to flee to Holland to escape fines and imprisonment. His congregation emigrated almost in a body to New England in 1632.
áááááWilliam Kelsey was one of the early founders of Hartford CT and his name is on the founders monument for that town which is located in the "ancient burial ground" of the First Congregational Church, now known as Center Church. His name is also found on the "Adventurers Boulder" found at City Hall in Hartford. There is speculation that William Kelsey migrated to Hartford with Rev. Hooker's company in June of 1636. However, there are independent reasons to believe that Kelsey was with the pioneer group of about fifty men, women, and children at Hartford in the fall and winter of 1635-36. His home lot is found amid those in Hartford's oldest English settlement, on the north side, primarily taken up by the pioneers, while Hooker's company of 1636 mainly settled across the Little River on the south side.
áááááThe name of William Kelsey's wife is not known but her birth is shown to be about 1613 when Winthrop records her age at forty-six years when he treats her in 1659 for a sore "right elboe". However, that her given name may be Hester might be inferred from from the fact that William's oldest daughter is named Hester and his sons, Mark and John, and daughters, Priscilla Gillett and Abigail Hull, all had elder daughters named Hester. The often cited claim, leading to speculation of Mayflower descendancy, that William's wife was named Bethia Hopkins results from a mis-interpretation of records of Bethia "Kelly", the wife, then widow, of John Kelly who later married David Phillips.

ááááá
Immigration: on 30 May 1630, Arrived in New England with his parents and siblings on the "Mary & John."

áááááSamuel Phelps came to New England as a child living first at Dorchester and removing to Windsor in 1636. In 1650 he married Sarah Griswold, the daughter of another prominent Windsor family. In 1657 Samuel bought Thomas Orton's house and land near the homestead of his father and brother, William. The house stood at the rear of the lot opposite his father's house. This lot Samuel sold to his brother Nathaniel and he removed to the Poquonock section of Windsor where he had received a land grant.
áááááIn 1659/60 Samuel paid William Buell 7s for his short seat in the meeting house. In 1666 he was witness to a deed between his father and the sachem Sehat. This deed was for land that William Phelps had purchased thirty years earlier in 1635, however, not being able to prove full payment of the same, honestly bought it over again.
áááááTown records of May 24, 1669 read "There was a day of training; by reason of the death of Samuel Phelps, voted that Benjamin Holcomb supply his place as Way Warden." Samuel had died on the 15'th of the month at the age of 47. His estate was substantial at £773 which ranked among the top ten inventories of those of the second generation in Windsor. This was probably of little comfort to the widow Sarah who was left with nine young children, the oldest, Samuel, was only 17 years old at the time.
áááááThe following year, Sarah married Nathaniel Pinney with whom she had two more children. In 1776 Sarah's second husband died, now leaving her with eleven children ranging in age from 3 to 24. Sarah herself lived another forty years and died in 1715 at the age of 83. She left her estate of £28-19-05 to be divided equally among her four daughters, Sarah Moore, Mary Adams, Abigail Winchell, and Sarah Grant.
