áááááWilliam Gaylord, Jr. came to Dorchester on the "Mary and John" with his father in 1630. He had an original grant of a home-lot 18 rods wide in Windsor and his name is found, along with his fathers, on the Founders Monument in Windsor. In 1654 it is noted that William Gaylord, the younger, was a joint purchaser with his father and brother, John, in a parcel that was John Warham's, on the East side of the Great River.
áááááWilliam married Ann Porter in 1644 who died in 1653 leaving William with 5 small children. A short time later, William married Elizabeth Drake with whom he had two more children. William died in 1656 at the young age of 38 leaving his relatively new bride with seven children ranging in age from 11 years to the youngest, Nathaniel, who was only fifteen weeks old at the death of their father. Four years later, his widow married John Elderkin. William's estate was inventoried at £423-00-09 and £383-06-06 after all debts were paid. Because of the young age of his children, his estate wasn't distributed to the widow and children until 1673, 17 years after his death.
Immigration: on 30 May 1630, of Crewkerne, Somerset, England, arrived at Drochester on the "Mary & John."
Founder/Proprietor: Windsor, 1636.

Immigration: on 30 May 1630, of Crewkerne, Somerset, England, arrived at Drochester on the "Mary & John."
Freeman: on 18 May 1631 in Dorchester, Suffolk Co., Mass..
Founder/Proprietor: Windsor, 1636.
Religion/Church: A Deacon in Reverand Warham's Church at Dorchester and Windsor.
Education: signed his will.
Public Office: in January 1631/32 A town officer of Dorchester.

áááááAlthough his English roots are not determined, four of William's children were baptized in Crewkerne, Somerset, England. In 1634, the will of Joan Patten, of England, relationship unknown, leaves £5 to William Gaylord of New England and calls him "cousin". Although this infers a probable relationship, the true relationship remains uncertain, and there is conjecture that she was an aunt.
áááááWilliam was a follower of the Reverend Warham and arrived in New England on the "Mary and John" in 1630, recognized as the first ship to arrive in New England in advance of the Winthrop fleet. William requested freemanship in Dorchester on 19 October 1630 and was admitted on 18 May 1631. Ownership of land in Dorchester is implied in 1633 and between 1635 and 1637/8 William received grants of totaling about twenty acres, including five acres in the Neck.
áááááThe claim has been made that William Gaylord was made deacon of the Dorchester church before the Mary & John sailed, and it seems to be certain that he was deacon as soon as that ship arrived in New England. In the earliest town records all the acts of the town were signed by four men: John Warham, John Maverick, William Rockwell and William Gaylord. Warham and Maverick were the ministers of the church, and Rockwell and Gaylord would seem to be the deacons. Also on 26 August 1633 William Gaylord and William Rockwell were appointed administrators to the estate of John Russell who had died in Dorchester, and this is a diaconal function. Neither William Gaylord nor his wife was admitted to the second church at Dorchester, organized late in 1636, clearly indicating that he retained his membership in the Warham church, where he continued as deacon after he moved to Connecticut.1
áááááAbout 1638 William removed to Windsor where he was granted a lot 25 rods wide and later bought a house lot from Francis Stiles 13 rods wide. His name is among those listed on the Founders Monument in Windsor. He served as Deputy for Windsor to the Connecticut General Court, 1639-1647, 1649-1662, 1664, holding that position for more terms than any other man in Connecticut.

Stated in The Great Migration Begins:
áááááIn the Windsor land inventory on 25 December 1640 Walter [William?] Gaylord had a homelot of twenty acres; sixteen acres of meadow; fifty-eight rods in breadth by three miles in length over the Great River; thirty-nine acres near Pine Meadow; and a twenty acre woodlot upon the plains toward Paquannick (which he exchanged with Bigod Eggleston for eighteen acres adjoining to Rocky Neck).
áááááWilliam died in 1673 at the age of 88, having outlived his wife by 16 years. He signed his will of 31 January 1671/2, but made his mark to codicil of 14 November 1672. In this codicil, William states: "the Lord having lengthened out my life longer than I expected" . . . His estate was inventoried at £219.17.06.

Immigration: By 1638, possibly with the Rev. Huit party which came to Dorchester on the "Susan and Ellen" and arrived July 17, 1638.
Education: Signed his name.
Occupation: Merchant.
Public Office: Constable 1639; Town Clerk 1640; Grand Juror 1643; Deputy to the General Court of Connecticut, 1639, 1646, 1647.
Residence: in 1620 of Felsted, Essex, England.

áááááJohn Porter was born in Felsted, Essex County, England where he married, in Messing, Anna White in 1620. Both were of fairly prosperous families. They had nine children born in Felsted and the marriage and birth records are found in Essex County records. In 1638, when John was 44, the family emigrated to New England, probably with the Huit party on the "Susan and Ellen", and removed soon to Windsor.
áááááIn April of 1639 John acquired a home lot in Windsor on the Island. He resided next door to Joseph Loomis, whose wife, Mary White, was a sister to John's wife. Both John and Joseph were influential and prosperous men in Windsor and by 1641 John had grants from the town totaling 400 acres, ranking among the top quarter in Windsor. John Porter and Joseph Loomis were also brother-in-laws to William Goodwin and John White, both influential men in Hartford.
áááááJohn had two more children born to him in Windsor and was active in the community serving in both town and colony offices. He was involved in the merchant trade, probably in cloth, and probably traded with his son James, who was a merchant in London. James would also eventually act as agent of the Colony of Connecticut in London.
