ááááá

áááááThis family is constructed from the wills of the brothers John and Ralph, both of whom died in 1557. Each leaves land to their mother with no mention of their father whom, we assume, is deceased. They each mention their sister Jane, and, between the two wills, brother-in-laws, (_____) Alderman, William Wandyll ,and Thomas Ryvett. This would seem to show that there were at least two unnamed sisters. The parents names are unknown though they might be the children of John and Blanch Bancroft. This John's will is recorded, though no longer extant, in February of 1546/7 in Wolstanton, Co. Stafford. Executors were the relict, Blanch Bancroft, and Thomas Rowley.

áááááJohn Carrington was born circa 1602. He married (1) Mary (__?__) before 1635. He married (2) Joane (__?__). He died between February 1651 and March 1652/53 in Hartford, Hartford Co., Conn., executed for witchcraft.
ááááá
Immigration: in May 1635, Sailed from England on the "Susan & Ellen."
Occupation: Carpenter.
Residence: before 1643 of Wethersfield.

áááááJohn came to America with a wife, Mary, on the "Susan & Ellen" which sailed from England in May, 1635. They were listed as 33 yrs old and John's occupation is shown as that of a carpenter. They arrived at Boston and by 1643 are found in Wethersfield where his homestead was on the East side of Sandy Lane just south of Thomas Standish. Mary, John's first wife, probably died between 1635 and 1644 as we find in 1644 John is at Wethersfield with his wife Joane. In 1649 John was fined 10s for "Bartering of a Gunn with an Indian". Although there is no record of the children of John and Mary, or his second wife, Joane, it is generally accepted among genealogists that John of Farmington and Waterbury was their son and that they may have also had a daughter Rebecca who married Abraham Andrews.
áááááOn February 20, 1650/51, a trial was held for John and Joane Carrington at Hartford. Magistrates included, among others, Governor John Haynes, Edward Hopkins, and Henry Wolcott. In addition to our ancestor Henry Wolcott, who served in the capacity of a magistrate, three of our grandfathers, William Phelps, Edward Griswold, and Stephen Hart, were among the jury of twelve which convicted the Carrington's and sentenced them to death.
áááááJohn and Joane were executed for witchcraft by hanging, probably in Hartford, between March, 1650/51 and March 1652/53. The executions likely took place about February of 1652/53, shortly before the inventory of the estate was presented to the court. The Carrington's estate, probated on March 16, 1652/53, was a meagre £23.11.00 with a debt of £13.11.00. The inventory of the estate was ordered to be filed but not recorded.
