Immigration: before 1635, From England.
Freeman: on 6 May 1635 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Mass..
Military Service: Served in the Pequot Indian War, 1637.3,4

Thomas Buckland arrived in New England by 6 May, 1635, when he took the freeman oath in Boston. He was at Windsor as early as 1637 when he has a land grant 9 1/2 rods wide bordering the Ferry road and Sandy Hill road. He later added to this with the purchase of George Hull's lot. His name is listed on the Founders Monument in Windsor. He received a land grant for his service at the battle of Mystic in the Pequot War of 1637, the first Indian war in New England. At Windsor Thomas was a juror in 1644, a collector in 1649 and a way warden in 1655.
It appears that the male line of Thomas became extinct in the third generation and further Windsor references to the Buckland name are descendants of William Buckland of Hingham and Rehoboth, Mass.5 Although it cannot be discounted, there is no apparent relationship between the immigrants, Thomas of Windsor, and William of Massachusetts.

CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Membership in Dorchester church prior to 4 March 1632/3 implied by freemanship.
FREEMAN: 4 March 1632/3 [MBCR 1:367].
EDUCATION: Signed his will by mark.
ESTATE: In 1632 the lot of John Crabb was granted to Mr. Denslow [NEHGR 32:58]. Granted lot #43, three acres in the meadow beyond Naponset [DTR 321]. Nicholas Denslow was named as an abutter in grants of land to other persons in Dorchester [DTR 2, 11, 18].
In the Windsor land inventory on 25 December 1640 held five parcels of land: homelot of six and a half acres; four acres and a half on the west side of the street; ten acres and a half in the Great Meadow; fifty-three acres in the Pine Meadow; and twenty-four acres in the Northwest Field [WiBOP 32]. (The Great Meadow and Northwest Field parcels are annotated in the margin "Nicolas Buckland.")
In his will, dated 4 March 1666/7, "Nicolas Denslow of Windsor" bequeathed to "my wife ... the use and improvement of my whole estate during her life and when she dies I bequeath to Timothy Buckland my grandchild all my lot lying at Pine Meadow both in the meadow and out of the meadow" and "to Nicolas Buckland my grandchild ... all my housing and homelot entire and all my meadow land in the Great Meadow either pasture or plowing" as well as some movables and "my woodlot"; "the rest of my estate in cattle of all sorts, corn or any movables" to be at my wife's dispose [Hartford PD Case #1640; Manwaring 1:192]. On 3 March 1669/70 Capt. Aaron Cooke asked for a distribution of the estate of Nicholas Denslow, his wife being a coheir; no action was taken [Manwaring 1:192].
The inventory of the estate of Nicholas Denslow, taken on 5 June 1667, totalled £329 2s., of which £255 was real estate: "on the east side of the street in housing, orchard and houseland with pasture adjoining nine acres," £90; "on the west side of the street a remainder part of his homelot 4 acres and "," £20; "in the Great Meadow 17 acres," £85; "a woodlot 24 acres," £10; "in Pine Meadow 11 acres," £33; "in upland adjoining 42 acres," £17 [Hartford PD Case #1640].
In her will, dated 5 June 1667 and proved 2 September 1669, "Elissabeth Denslow of Windsor" bequeathed to "my grandchild Nicolas Buckland all my household stuff" with the exception of some named items which she bequeathed to "Sara Buckland my grandchild"; "all my clothes and linen I bequeath unto my daughter Buckland for her to divide between herself and Nicklas and his three sisters that are unmarried"; to "my grandchild Edwa an unknown person d Adames his wife my cloak"; "my grandchild Nicolas Buckland" not to demand anything out of his father's estate, and to be executor and residuary legatee, and to pay additional bequests, as follows: to "my daughter Joan Cooke" twenty shillings; to "my grandchild her daughter Eliasabeth [sic] Cooke" a heifer worth three pounds; to "my grandchildren Samuell Cooke & Noah Cooke" twenty shillings apiece; to "my daughter Buckland forty shillings and unto her daughter Hanna Buckland forty shillings [and] unto her daughter Temperance Buckland ten pounds [and] unto her daughter Sara Buckland ten pounds [Hartford PD Case #1632; Manwaring 1:191].
The inventory of the estate of "Elisabeth Denslow who died on the 13 day before of this present August," taken 30 August 1669, totalled £38 5s. [Hartford PD Case #1632].

Some sources claim various other children for Nicholas Denslow. Stiles ignores the two known daughters, but does include sons Henry and John. These men were not named in the wills of Nicholas or his widow; they may be nephews or more distant kinsmen of Nicholas, but they certainly are not sons. Roberts also includes a son Nicholas, who married in Netherbury in 1634 and remained in England; this man is not named in any New England record, and there is no reason to believe that he was son of Nicholas of Windsor. 2

Nicholas is said to have owned the site of the present Congregational Church, in the palisades, and lived there at the time of the Pequot War. Some claim he was in the "Battle of Mystic River" (Pequot War) and was said to be the oldest man in that fight. They cite (Kuhn, Mary & John, p.18) which I have yet to inspect. In May and June of 1637 one hundred thirty men were drafted from Hartford, Windsor, and Wethersfield for the Pequot war and only eighteen of the forty two men drafted from Windsor have been identified so the possibility that Nicholas Denslow took part in the first Indian war in New England can not be discounted.

Immigration: before 1660.

Edward was of Simsbury when he married Elizabeth Buckland in 1660. At the close of King Philip's War, Edward is noted as contributing 0-0-7 to the poor of the other colonies. At his death in 1683, Edward left a small estate of £56-18-02 and administration was granted to the widow. Distribution of the estate consisted of £31 to the widow and £28 to the daughter at 18 years of age. Some say Edward and Elizabeth also had a son Edward. If this is the case, he is not mentioned in the estate in 1683 so he would have died as a child before his fathers death.
The widow, Elizabeth, married 2'nd, James Miles by 1693. James was a partner with John Matson who would marry Elizabeth's daughter by her first marriage. James Miles and John Matson split their holdings in 1694. Whether James died or abandoned his wife is not known, however, in 1696, town records record "Elizabeth Miles the wife of James Miles you being now a resident at your sons John Matsons these presents are to warrant you and admonish you to depart out of These Bounds and Limits of the Township of Simsbury forth with…and you may not any longer reside here."4 Nearly thirty years later, John Matson was awarded 40 shillings from the town for "keeping his mother Miles". Elizabeth died in February of 1728/9 at the age of 88.
The origin of Edward Adams is unknown. His son-in-law, John Matson, was one of the early settlers of Salmon Brook in Simsbury. John and Mary (Adams) Matson were neighbors, and had land dealings, with brothers Samuel and Daniel Adams, sons of George Adams of Watertown and Cambridge. Could it be that Mary was kin to Samuel and Daniel? Was Edward a brother, or cousin, of George Adams of Cambridge?
