Robert Wilson|d. 21 Jul 1655|p124.htm#i3089|(__?__) Wilson||p158.htm#i3940||||||||||||||||
Relationship=10th great-grandfather of Norbert Raymond Bankert.
Robert Wilson was the son of (__?__) Wilson. He married Elizabeth Stebbins, daughter of Deacon Edward Stebbins and Frances Tough, circa 1649.1,2 He died on 21 July 1655 in Farmington, Hartford Co., Conn..3
Immigration: before 1647, when he is found in Windsor.
The origin of Robert Wilson is unknown, although there are some interesting hints that he may originate in Yorkshire. He is first found in Windsor in 1647 when he and William Thrall jointly buy of Simon Hoyte a lot in Hoyte's Meadow in which they agreed that the house and land would be divided in the middle and the well and woodcourt would be enjoyed interchangeably. By 1653 Robert was in Farmington and in 1654 William Thrall bought Wilson's interest in this land.
About 1649 Robert married Elizabeth Stebbins of Hartford with whom he had two sons before his death in Farmington in 1655. Robert's widow remarried Thomas Cadwell about 1658 with whom she had another ten children. Given the known ages, it is probable that Robert was in his thirties at his death. John and Samuel, sons of this marriage, would both die in their forties.
Elizabeth was the daughter of Edward Stebbins and his wife Frances Tough of Hartford. This was a prominent family and Edward was a Deacon of the church and active in civil affairs. Elizabeth's son, Edward Cadwell, by her second husband was the namesake and favorite of his grandfather Stebbins, to whom the latter made large bequests. Elizabeth herself was not favored by her parents. Her father did not leave her anything specifically, although making ample provisions for her children. Her mother left her all her apparel in her will of 1670, but by the codicil of 1673 reduced this merely to her "wearing goone."
Robert had a sister, Isabel Wilson, who married William Phelps in Windsor. After the death of Robert, his young son Samuel would live as a son of William and Isabel who themselves had remained childless. It is of interest that both Robert, and his sister Isabel, married into prominent and respectable families.
Robert Wilson and Isabel (Wilson) Phelps are called "kinsman" and are the first people named in the will of Thomas Nowell in 1648. Another bequest is made to Christopher Nowell [a nephew?], son of Edward Nowell of Wakefield, Yorkshire, England. Isabel (Wilson) Phelps was a witness to this will and signed with her mark [X]. The relation of Robert and Isabel to Thomas Nowell is not stated and fifty years later Robert's sons were still involved in the execution of this will and call themselves next of kin in this country.
In 1976 George McCracken suggests a possible relationship of Robert Wilson and Thomas Nowell (TAG 52:76-85). McCracken suggests that Thomas Nowell is not himself related to the Wilson's, but that Thomas may have had a first unknown wife who was related to the Wilson's. In the will of 1663, Edward Stebbins, father-in-law of Robert Wilson, leaves a bequest to Richard Weller, who was the widower of a woman named Ann Wilson. If Ann Wilson was a sister of Robert and Isabel, it would seem that she would also be included in the will of Thomas Nowell. McCracken suggests that Ann Wilson might be a half sister of Thomas and Isabel, and that is was their mother, and not hers, who had some relationship with an unknown first wife of Thomas Nowell.
In 1692 a Phineas Wilson of Boston and Hartford died leaving a very large estate. Phineas was a wealthy merchant "of Dublin" and he left bequests to three sisters of Hull, Yorkshire, England. He names his wife, Dr. Thomas Hooker, Deacon John Wilson [son of Robert], and Benjamin Mountford as overseers and guardians. While we might ascertain that this indicates a relationship between these Wilson families, we must also consider that the relationship is through the church, and not necessarily familial, although Robert's grandson named a son Phineas (John, Samuel, Robert).
