Frank Francese
circa 1897
Frank Francese was born circa 1853 in Molfetta, Italy. He married Giustina Bennette in Italy. He died circa 1900 in Molfetta of influenza.

Immigration: Depart Naples on the "Madonna" and landed at Ellis Island on April 22'nd, 1913.

Frank (Francesco) and Giustina (Bennette) Francese began their family in the 1880's and by 1900 they had five children and owned and operated a grocery store in Molfetta. Frank (Sr.) died in Italy of influenza about 1900 at the age of 47 and daughter Mary died at the age of 21, reportedly of cancer after refusing to allow the amputation of her leg. The rest of the family would all eventually end up in America.
As early as 1903 the records show that families of the name Annese, Ciannamea, and Francese, of Molfetta, were emigrating to America, nearly all headed for Hoboken, New Jersey. Of unknown interest, a 1910 manifest shows Molfetta residents Giuseppe Annese, age 34, Sergio Binetti, age 39, Michele DeBari, and Salvatore Ciannamea, age 23. All headed for Hoboken.
Family lore claims that sons Frank and Felix enjoyed a bit of gambling and when it was found that the till was a little light at the grocery store the boys were sent packing. Frank and Felix are listed on the manifest of the "Venezia" which left Naples in March of 1913, however, for unknown reasons, they failed to make the trip and their names are crossed out. The next month they did depart Naples on the "Madonna" and landed at Ellis Island on April 22'nd, 1913. Traveling with them were some of their Molfetta neighbors including Nicolo DeBari, age 27, Domenico Murolo, age 27, Pasquale Annese, age 27, and Mauro Binetti, age 24. All of these men claimed Hoboken New Jersey as their destination. I am not aware of the significance or relationship of these men, however, all of these surnames are associated with the Francese and Ciannamea families of Troy, New York. What brought Frank and Felix to Troy is unknown, however, by 1920, Frank and Felix are residing at 55 Hill St. in Troy, New York, where the rest of the family would eventually settle.
In 1920, Frank and Felixe's sister, Maria, landed at Ellis Island on the ship "Patria" along with her husband and son, Nicholas and Giuseppe Annese. Also traveling with them was Giuseppe Ciannamea, their brother-in-law, and a cousin, Georgio Parvana. Sister, Pasqua (Francese) Ciannamea arrived later in the fall on the ship "Providence" traveling with Lucretia Silvestri who was "promised to Francesco Francese". Their widowed mother, Giustina (Bennette) Francese was the last of the family to arrive, coming to America in 1924, or shortly thereafter. Except for Maria ("Lotsie") who lived for a time in Hoboken, the family would live and reside in Troy with all living to an advanced age.

Stephen Hart was born in England, possibly in Braintree, about 1599. About 1632 he was at Cambridge (formerly Newtown), Massachusetts, one of the fifty-four original settlers. Stephen was possibly a brother of Edmund Harte of Weymouth and Westfield Massachusetts, who is found in New England at the same time.
Stephen was a deacon of Rev. Thomas Hooker's church in Cambridge, and went with him in 1635 to Hartford, Conn., where he was an original proprietor, 1639, and where he continued as deacon. His name is found on the founders monument in the Center Church burial ground in Hartford. It is said Hartford derives its name from a crossing of the Connecticut river he discovered, known as Hart's Ford. However, another explanation is that Hartford was named after the English town of Hertford. Stephen served as a soldier in the Pequot Indian War in 1637 for which he was later granted a lot in Soldier's Field, in Hartford.
